Hi there. Can I tell you what I dream of doing?
To create fair speech: tackling unfair media representation and create a network of storytellers.
It's all part of making a better world.
I am aware my policy will not emancipate all media away from harmful narrative, as there is a very strong economic framework that dictates what is released in our press. However, I hope to use my efforts in campaigning to improve society's caution in taking media stereotypes. In addition to giving a platform to those who are often victimized by it, to become their own storytellers.
This is really going to help people.
The impact of my vision will be mainly felt by the refugee community (as the first population I will want to focus on), by giving greater care and respect to their experiences, rather than criminalize them. I hope it will also influence the reader's perspective of those who read local media, and especially those who create it. To greater regulate what they produce.
It's not just about having an idea though - here are the things I know I can achieve:
To create an opportunity for refugees to access media
To deconstruct the gullibility of those who read media, to not accept harmful narratives.
To create a greater regulation of how media is written in its protection of minority communities.
I'm going to make this happen, and this is how I know it'll make a difference.
In terms of how readers repsond to media, that is not necessarily a tangible pattern that can be measured. However in total:
1. If local media can follow a policy on how to represent refugee communities.
2. If local media can collaborate with refugee charities that can create a sustainable link, which will provide opportunities for refugees to connect with media.
Thanks for listening to me. Will you help me build a better world?
