Hi there. Can I tell you what I dream of doing?
My vision is for Canada to drastically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the Paris Accord's needs, by converting its energy infrastructure to renewable energy and divesting from the oil market, in addition to reconfiguring urban areas to be inherently more environmentally friendly and less energy intensive.
It's all part of making a better world.
The world is better because indigenous peoples would not have their land encroached on and destroyed by oil development. Air quality would be better because less fumes would be generated, particularly in cities where cars have significantly diminished in importance. Urban areas are better because they are more accessible to all through increased walkability, public transit options, and aren't sprawling.
This is really going to help people.
The impact of my vision will be mainly felt by people who live in car-oriented areas; their reliance on cars will diminish. marginalized groups would likely benefit the most from improved air quality and greater accessibility. Energy sector workers are likely to find more stable and prosperous jobs that vary less with the market than oil.
It's not just about having an idea though - here are the things I know I can achieve:
reduction of GHG emissions to a level that allows global warming to stay under 1.5C
better cities that are healthier and sustainably connected
improved air quality
I'm going to make this happen, and this is how I know it'll make a difference.
I would know if the vision is achieved if GHG emissions in Canada drop significantly, if investments in renewable energy grids skyrocket and oil investments shrink a lot, if oil exploration stops, if car ridership decreases and sustainable transit modes replace it, and if respiratory disease declines.
Thanks for listening to me. Will you help me build a better world?
