Hi there. Can I tell you what I dream of doing?
I want to increase awareness about the socio-economic benefits of structured creative industries in Nigeria. I also want to highlight how the creative industries can play a vital role in job creation, poverty alleviation and cultural preservation.
Too often, creatives in my country are strangled by societal stereotypes that portray them as individuals that lack genuine productivity and ambition.
It's all part of making a better world.
More opportunities, growth and development, job creation, cultural relevance and preservation, improved economy, better living conditions, an alternative road to self actualization other than white collar jobs. A greater appreciation of our roots as Africans and what we have to offer the world.
Thousands of children may never have access to formal education but that should never define who they are.
This is really going to help people.
I’m concentrating on my country for now. Children and youths without access to formal education are first level beneficiaries. However , success will trigger a ripple effect that would see communities and indeed states benefit from harnessing the creative skills of inhabitants. By and large, local production as well as indigenous goods and services will become more commonplace.
It's not just about having an idea though - here are the things I know I can achieve:
An integration of creative studies into the national educational curriculum at all levels.
Creative institutions and bodies that not only help hone skills but also provide a launch pad for career opportunities.
A true cultural identity unsullied by appropriation.
I'm going to make this happen, and this is how I know it'll make a difference.
I believe this is a never ending struggle. Nevertheless, I will measure success by the penetration of our voice. When the government starts to act, when stake holders in the creative industries are convinced of the benefits of such a policy. When currently floundering sectors like tourism, arts and culture undergo a renaissance and resurgence.
Thanks for listening to me. Will you help me build a better world?
