Hi there. Can I tell you what I dream of doing?
I want to enable every young person in care to have the relationships and skills in their life to journey into adulthood confidently and reach their potential. Supported lodgings can enable this for many young people. I want to increase the use of this provision across England so that more care experienced young people are supported during and through this crucial transition point in their life.
It's all part of making a better world.
No young person leaving the care system will be entering adulthood by themselves. They have people to belong to and they feel supported to take the next steps in their journey. Fewer care experienced adults will end up homeless, unemployed or lonely. Rather, they will feel empowered to make a difference, reach their potential and pursue their goals.
This is really going to help people.
The impact of my vision will be mainly felt by young people in care but all of society will be benefitted as more care experienced adults will go on to thrive, rather than experiencing poor outcomes.
It's not just about having an idea though - here are the things I know I can achieve:
Every local authority operates a high quality supported lodgings scheme.
More young people are offered and take up a supported lodgings placement.
Supported lodgings is as recognisable as adoption and fostering. It becomes the go-to option for young people entering care aged 16+.
I'm going to make this happen, and this is how I know it'll make a difference.
1. Data will evidence that every local authority operates a SL scheme. Evaluations of SL scheme will demonstrate high quality programmes with positive outcomes for young people.
3. Data will evidence a doubling in the number of young people in SL across England from 1000 to 2000.
4. Gov policy will consistently refer to SL as a good option. Public polling - awareness raised from 30 to 60%.
Thanks for listening to me. Will you help me build a better world?
