Hi there. Can I tell you what I dream of doing?
I want to create a foundation or a group of volunteers who will help refugees get a GED or high school equivalency diploma for free. Only 3 % of refugees go on to get a university degree (compared with 33% of global population). This low number is an indication that due to their vulnerable situation, refugees miss out on free educational opportunities and better jobs.
It's all part of making a better world.
Just like all of our kids, refugees of all ages should have a high school equivalent degree to be able to take part in our society, to think critically and to become productive and knowledgable members of our society. While refugees often come into a country with low expectations of finding low paid jobs, a high school degree will give them a change to get an education and to start having choices.
This is really going to help people.
The impact of my vision will be mainly felt by younger refugees who may or may not have gone through some formal education in their home country and who dream to get a broader education. A GED high school certificate is an English degree. So schooling will include language study as well as study in four major subjects (math, science, social studies and language arts).
It's not just about having an idea though - here are the things I know I can achieve:
Refugees will get a formal education that will teach them the basics in fours subject areas.
Learners will learn to think critically, make choices and maybe even apply to a university
Refugees will be able to participate in our society and are given the opportunity to become more productive, satisfied and educated citizens.
I'm going to make this happen, and this is how I know it'll make a difference.
A GED degree requires not only a group of dedicated volunteer tutors but also a money to pay for the exams. Ideally, this association would be financed through grants.
Thanks for listening to me. Will you help me build a better world?
