Hi there. Can I tell you what I dream of doing?
Everyone deserves a safe place to call home, and I want to end the current building safety crisis that's affecting millions of people in UK apartment blocks.
It's all part of making a better world.
People will be safe and feel safe in their homes. They won’t have to leave a packed bag by the door every night, out of fear they might have to run from a fire. Innocent leaseholders will no longer feel trapped or be on the hook for huge costs to fix safety defects they did not create.
This is really going to help people.
The impact of my vision will be mainly felt by ordinary families living in new-build apartment blocks in towns and cities up and down the UK. They may be leaseholders on their first step of the housing ladder, lower-income families who entered into shared ownership with a housing association, or social housing tenants.
It's not just about having an idea though - here are the things I know I can achieve:
Regulations to ensure named individuals are accountable for building safety for all apartment blocks - including those under 18 metres. This will reduce the number of serious fires.
Clear government regulations that ban all combustible materials from the external wall of apartment blocks, including balconies and windows. This will reduce the number of serious fires.
Leaseholders have zero costs for remediation or interim safety measures that arise due to historic safety issues.
I'm going to make this happen, and this is how I know it'll make a difference.
We do not experience another catastrophic loss of life (like at Grenfell) or loss of people’s homes (like at Barking and Worcester Park). The number of serious fires (affecting 2+ floors) decreases as a result.
Thanks for listening to me. Will you help me build a better world?
